Treatment at CMH was wonderful and was exactly what I needed. Everyone was so caring and amazing. I felt like I was in a safe and trusted environment, surrounded by people who wanted to help me. I came to them when I was at my lowest and left a stronger person with the therapy and tools I needed. If you really need help and are ready to focus on getting better, then you should reach out to them and find out more.

My loved one spent 6 weeks in this program. This is the longest he has ever spent in a residential program. He experiences organic mental health issues and is a young adult. I was very concerned that the program was not dedicated to strictly age 18-25 because the programs for adults have been more on the older side (30+) and this is one of the reasons why he didn’t stay. However this program had a good array of clients from age to gender to race to experiences and I believe this really made a big difference. Also the care team was very focused on meeting my loved one where they stood. There is also family programming ongoing and this also had a very important impact on the recovery process. The resident was very nice and comfortable and a nice home away from home. We were able to visit on weekends and have good times just enjoying each other’s company. The restrictions were not extreme and the staff were all accommodating to all of our needs. The care program including therapist and the case manager were readily available to review status weekly. I was able to communicate with my loved one and the care team members by requesting family meetings. My loved one and I were the heads of the care team and this allowed us to input goals and aspirations regarding the recovery process. I continue to stay in touch with other family members who have loved ones in treatment centers around the country by way of a special weekly family care zoom meeting that allows us to learn more about dealing with struggling loved ones and to listen to and relate to others who are also going through this. It’s a very good program and I highly recommend it. My loved one is now in a PHP residential and will hopefully move on from there to more independent living thanks mostly to CAMHT program and the stepping stone they provided to a life well lived. Thank you to everyone at CAMHT and we miss you!

The housemates I have had over my time here have been amazing and supportive. It’s clean quiet and homey. I got to bring my dog and Daniela one of the staff brought her treats almost every night she worked. Rosemary would walk her in the mornings on the occasion I would be in the shower and she wanted out or if I was in therapy Areli taught her how to do rounds and would babysit it her when I would go to an AA meeting. She is going to miss all the extra love as well as I will miss everyone staff and housemates. Elly has taught me so much about how to use coping skills for my anxiety. My favorite are name it to tame it. Walk forward the storm and opposite action. I feel have come along way towards finding my new normal thanks to all the staff at Marie Ct. California Mental Health is amazing

Our son was in the 45 day program in San Martin. When he first arrived, he was withdrawn and closed off to receiving help. Thanks to the supportive staff, by the time he was discharged he had become open to treatment and relationships with staff and peers. We highly recommend California Mental Health for individuals with mental health challenges.

Had a really wonderful experience here, the staff are all amazing, and the program really helped me with my recovery. They do a lot of outings and fun activities, so you’re never just stuck in the house, and they encourage self care and taking time for yourself just as much as they encourage going to groups. Everything is always optional of course. Highly recommend this place, I know I won’t be going anywhere else if I ever need mental health help in the future

What Is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy is private, one-on-one work with a licensed therapist that allows the patient to focus on the concerns, emotions, experiences, and patterns that shape their life. Unlike group therapy, the conversation centers entirely on your treatment goals and personal needs. This setting is perfect for someone who wants to explore sensitive subjects, process difficult experiences, and build a clearer understanding of how to overcome their mental health issues.

At our facility, residential individual therapy is part of our What We Treat programs and follows a consistent structure – patients meet with their therapists twice each week for dedicated one-on-one sessions. In case involving family members would support your progress, one of these weekly sessions may become a family session. This approach preserves regular individual time and lets our clients benefit from Family Group Therapy.

The clinical team at California Mental Health builds personalized treatment plans and goals around each client’s specific strengths, priorities, and needs. Individualized Treatment will be selected to support your objectives, and as your needs change throughout treatment, mental health professionals will review your progress and adjust the plan accordingly.

Individual Therapy Benefits

There is a reason individual counseling is one of the most utilized therapeutic approaches – our patients note the following advantages of this modality:

Have your therapist’s full attention

you will have dedicated time with a clinician twice a week to talk through what is happening without competing with other people for attention or space.

Set the pace yourself

unlike group sessions, individual psychotherapy will give you room to pause, slow down, change direction, or spend more time on an issue that matters to you.

Speak in a private setting

when anxiety does not let you discuss your feelings and experiences elsewhere, you can bring up difficult topics and know they will remain between you and your therapist.

Practice between counseling sessions

take skills from counseling into your day and notice what makes daily tasks challenging when you struggle with depression.

Invite family when it is beneficial

we encourage family members to join therapy sessions to improve communication in the household.

Carry continuity through care

when you move between levels of care, individual counseling will remain a familiar part of the treatment experience.

Why Choose Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy in California at our facility gives our patients private space to go deeper into their experiences that might feel too complex or personal to unpack in a group setting. This method is different from Process Group Therapy, which adds an alternative perspective – hearing how other people make sense of their problems can help you reflect on your own. When these two formats of counseling are implemented together, you get to benefit from one-on-one exploration and shared understanding – there are different ways for you to engage with your treatment.

Twice-weekly individual sessions create continuity when you sign up for residential care. Meeting with your therapist regularly will help you keep momentum between conversations, give a clinician a clearer sense of how your week is unfolding, and revisit your goals when your clinical needs change. You can explore this modality and other therapeutic approaches through our Therapy Options hub.

Who Is Individual Therapy For?

Individual therapy can support adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or PTSD by helping them develop coping skills, understand complex emotional patterns, and work toward meaningful treatment goals.

Within our 24/7 stabilization environment, one-on-one counseling is recommended to patients who step down from hospitalization or need more structure than lower levels of care can provide, with a licensed nurse onsite.

How Distress Can Show Up What It Might Feel Like How Individual Therapy Helps
Emotions Sudden shifts in mood, emotional shutdown, carrying feelings you hide Talk therapy will give you private space to understand what triggers you and learn to react differently
Thoughts Expecting the worst, second-guessing yourself, struggling to quiet your mind Examine your thought patterns to be able to respond to difficult thoughts with resilience
Relationships Keeping family and friends at a distance, feeling misunderstood, avoiding difficult conversations Explore relationship patterns with a therapist to practice healthier communication and boundaries
Daily life Postponing important tasks, losing motivation, feeling unable to make ordinary decisions Counseling will connect what you experience in sessions with practical goals you can achieve in real life

Individual Therapy FAQs

How Often Are Individual Therapy Sessions at California Mental Health?

Residents meet with the same therapist twice each week for dedicated one-on-one sessions, so there is never a long wait for the next appointment. That cadence is built into residential treatment and backed by ongoing clinical support between sessions.

Can a Family Member Join One of My Individual Therapy Sessions?

Yes – when involving family would support your progress, one of your two weekly sessions can become a family session led by your clinician, following our family group therapy approach. Your individual time is preserved, and families can also take part in our monthly family program, a weekend workshop led by two outside experts.

What Is the Difference Between Individual Therapy and Group Therapy?

Individual therapy is private time that centers entirely on your goals at a pace you set, which makes it the place for sensitive subjects and deeper work. Process group therapy adds a different perspective – hearing how others make sense of similar problems – and the two formats are usually combined; our therapy options hub shows how they fit with the rest of your care.

Which Therapy Approaches Are Used in Individual Sessions?

Your therapist draws on the methods in your treatment plan – cognitive behavioral therapy to work on the links between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, dialectical behavior therapy for distress tolerance and emotion regulation, and EMDR therapy when distressing experiences need to be processed. Acceptance and commitment therapy, solution-focused therapy, and trauma therapy are also used one-on-one, depending on your priorities.

Is Individual Therapy Available Through Virtual Programs?

Yes – individual counseling continues remotely through our virtual intensive outpatient program, alongside group sessions and other structured care, so you keep greater independence while treatment stays on track. Our levels of care overview explains when stepping down to virtual care is the right move.

Does Insurance Cover Individual Therapy at California Mental Health?

Yes – California Mental Health accepts most insurance plans, and one-on-one therapy is a standard part of treatment rather than an optional extra. You can verify your coverage online or let our team check your benefits in minutes before any session is scheduled.

Individual therapy begins with understanding what matters to you and what you want to change. Arrange a free, confidential assessment by calling (408) 457-1453 or visiting our Contact Us page.
