Treatment at CMH was wonderful and was exactly what I needed. Everyone was so caring and amazing. I felt like I was in a safe and trusted environment, surrounded by people who wanted to help me. I came to them when I was at my lowest and left a stronger person with the therapy and tools I needed. If you really need help and are ready to focus on getting better, then you should reach out to them and find out more.

My loved one spent 6 weeks in this program. This is the longest he has ever spent in a residential program. He experiences organic mental health issues and is a young adult. I was very concerned that the program was not dedicated to strictly age 18-25 because the programs for adults have been more on the older side (30+) and this is one of the reasons why he didn’t stay. However this program had a good array of clients from age to gender to race to experiences and I believe this really made a big difference. Also the care team was very focused on meeting my loved one where they stood. There is also family programming ongoing and this also had a very important impact on the recovery process. The resident was very nice and comfortable and a nice home away from home. We were able to visit on weekends and have good times just enjoying each other’s company. The restrictions were not extreme and the staff were all accommodating to all of our needs. The care program including therapist and the case manager were readily available to review status weekly. I was able to communicate with my loved one and the care team members by requesting family meetings. My loved one and I were the heads of the care team and this allowed us to input goals and aspirations regarding the recovery process. I continue to stay in touch with other family members who have loved ones in treatment centers around the country by way of a special weekly family care zoom meeting that allows us to learn more about dealing with struggling loved ones and to listen to and relate to others who are also going through this. It’s a very good program and I highly recommend it. My loved one is now in a PHP residential and will hopefully move on from there to more independent living thanks mostly to CAMHT program and the stepping stone they provided to a life well lived. Thank you to everyone at CAMHT and we miss you!

The housemates I have had over my time here have been amazing and supportive. It’s clean quiet and homey. I got to bring my dog and Daniela one of the staff brought her treats almost every night she worked. Rosemary would walk her in the mornings on the occasion I would be in the shower and she wanted out or if I was in therapy Areli taught her how to do rounds and would babysit it her when I would go to an AA meeting. She is going to miss all the extra love as well as I will miss everyone staff and housemates. Elly has taught me so much about how to use coping skills for my anxiety. My favorite are name it to tame it. Walk forward the storm and opposite action. I feel have come along way towards finding my new normal thanks to all the staff at Marie Ct. California Mental Health is amazing

Our son was in the 45 day program in San Martin. When he first arrived, he was withdrawn and closed off to receiving help. Thanks to the supportive staff, by the time he was discharged he had become open to treatment and relationships with staff and peers. We highly recommend California Mental Health for individuals with mental health challenges.

Had a really wonderful experience here, the staff are all amazing, and the program really helped me with my recovery. They do a lot of outings and fun activities, so you’re never just stuck in the house, and they encourage self care and taking time for yourself just as much as they encourage going to groups. Everything is always optional of course. Highly recommend this place, I know I won’t be going anywhere else if I ever need mental health help in the future

Psychosis Symptoms

Psychosis symptoms can vary in intensity and may not always be obvious, but recognizing them early is key to seeking help. Pay attention to the following signs:
Hallucinations

Individuals may experience sensory perceptions without external stimuli, such as hearing voices, seeing things that aren’t there, or feeling sensations on the skin. These can be distressing and lead to withdrawal from reality.

Delusions

Fixed false beliefs, like paranoia about being persecuted or having grandiose ideas of special powers, persist despite evidence to the contrary. This can cause significant emotional turmoil and strained relationships.

Disorganized Thinking and Speech

Thoughts may become jumbled, leading to incoherent speech, rapid topic shifts, or difficulty following conversations. This cognitive disruption can impair work, school, or social interactions.

A reduction in normal emotional responses, such as lack of motivation, social withdrawal, flat affect, or reduced ability to experience pleasure. These symptoms often contribute to long-term functional challenges.

Impaired Insight

People with psychosis may not recognize their symptoms as abnormal, leading to denial or resistance to treatment. This lack of awareness can delay recovery and increase risks like self-neglect.

Emotional Disturbances

Intense fear, confusion, or agitation may accompany symptoms, sometimes resulting in behavioral changes like aggression or isolation. Physical effects, such as sleep disturbances or appetite changes, can also occur.

Psychosis symptoms can vary in intensity and may not always be obvious, but recognizing them early is key to seeking help. Pay attention to the following signs:

Symptom Group What It Can Involve How Care Helps
Positive Hallucinations or fixed false beliefs (delusions) Medication and therapy can reduce their intensity
Negative Withdrawal, flat affect, or low motivation Structured support helps rebuild routine and connection
Disorganized Jumbled thinking or hard-to-follow speech Treatment supports clearer thinking over time
Cognitive Trouble with focus, memory, or planning Skills work and rehabilitation aid daily functioning

How to Diagnose Psychosis?

Diagnosing psychosis involves a comprehensive evaluation by a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or psychologist. This includes a detailed medical history, physical exam to rule out underlying conditions like substance use or neurological issues, and standardized assessments.

Clinicians use criteria from the DSM-5 to evaluate symptom duration, severity, and impact on daily functioning. Early diagnosis is essential for effective psychotic disorder therapy in California and for preventing long-term complications.

Psychosis Disorder Types

Psychosis can manifest in various forms, often linked to underlying mental health conditions. While some episodes are temporary, others may require ongoing management. Seeking appropriate schizophrenia treatment in California or other specialized care can significantly reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.

Schizophrenia

A chronic condition involving persistent hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking, lasting at least six months with significant functional decline.

Schizoaffective Disorder

Combines psychotic symptoms with mood disturbances like depression or mania, requiring treatment for both aspects to achieve stability.

Brief Psychotic Disorder

Short-term episodes, often triggered by extreme stress or trauma, lasting less than a month without recurring.

Delusional Disorder

Involves non-bizarre delusions (e.g., being followed) without other prominent psychotic symptoms, leading to avoidance behaviors.

Substance-Induced Psychosis

Triggered by drug or alcohol use, medications, or toxins, with symptoms resolving after the substance is cleared from the body.

Psychotic Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition

Caused by illnesses like brain tumors, infections, or neurological disorders, requiring treatment of the underlying physical issue.

What Does Psychosis Treatment Involve?

Psychosis treatment is tailored to the individual’s needs and often combines multiple approaches. At California Mental Health, we use a blend of medication management for psychosis, psychotherapy, and holistic methods, including early psychosis intervention in California, to address symptoms and promote recovery.

Medication

Antipsychotic medications, such as atypical or typical agents, are prescribed to reduce hallucinations and delusions

by balancing brain chemistry. Our psychiatrists monitor and adjust dosages for optimal results.

Psychotherapy for Psychosis

strategies, and improve insight into their condition.

Psychosis affects the whole household, so involving loved ones in structured sessions builds understanding and eases

tension at home. Strong family support is closely tied to fewer relapses and steadier recovery.

Coordinated Specialty Care

Multidisciplinary programs, including coordinated specialty care for psychosis, integrate therapy, medication, family support,

and vocational rehabilitation for comprehensive recovery.

We often complement these with two more evidence-based options:

Complementary practices, such as mindfulness, yoga, art therapy, and stress-reduction techniques, promote relaxation

and overall well-being alongside traditional treatments.

In a supportive group, people in recovery trade strategies and encouragement, which softens the isolation psychosis can

bring. Regular connection also helps rebuild the social confidence that symptoms often erode.

What Can Cause Psychosis?

Psychosis can arise from a combination of factors, often requiring early onset psychosis care to address root causes effectively.

Brain Chemistry

Imbalances in neurotransmitters like dopamine can trigger symptoms, especially in vulnerable individuals.

Genetics

A family history of psychotic disorders increases risk, as certain genes may predispose someone to conditions like schizophrenia.

Trauma

Experiencing abuse, loss, or severe stress can precipitate episodes, particularly in those with post-traumatic stress.

Substance Use

Drugs like cannabis, amphetamines, or hallucinogens can induce or exacerbate psychosis.

Medical Conditions

Brain injuries, infections, autoimmune disorders, or neurological issues like epilepsy may lead to psychotic symptoms.

Chronic Stress

Ongoing pressures from work, relationships, or environment can contribute to the onset in susceptible people.

How Long Does Psychosis Treatment Take?

The duration of psychosis treatment varies based on symptom severity, type of psychosis, and response to interventions. Initial improvements may appear in 4-6 weeks with medication or therapy, but full recovery often requires 3-12 months or longer, especially for chronic conditions.

Ongoing maintenance through psychosis recovery programs in California, such as periodic therapy or medication adjustments, may be needed to prevent relapse and support long-term stability.

Levels of Care for Psychosis Treatment

Where care should begin reflects how much daily safety and functioning are affected right now. It usually starts at one of two levels:
STABILIZING, 24-HOUR CARE

During an acute episode, or when symptoms make daily life feel unsafe, round-the-clock residential care offers a calm, structured place to stabilize. You stay in a warm, home-like environment where psychiatrists can fine-tune medication and a team is on hand at every hour.

  • Close psychiatric monitoring as medication is adjusted
  • A predictable, low-stress daily structure
  • A supportive setting focused on regaining stability
FOCUSED SUPPORT, FROM HOME

Once symptoms are stable, our virtual IOP provides ongoing therapy, medication check-ins, and skills support over secure video, helping people across San Jose, Silicon Valley, and the rest of California stay on track after an episode.

When to Seek Help for Psychosis?

Seek help for psychosis when symptoms like hallucinations or delusions persist for more than a few days, interfere with work, relationships, or daily activities, or cause significant distress. If there’s risk of harm to self or others, sudden behavioral changes, or confusion, immediate professional intervention is critical. Early action, especially during the first episode, leads to better outcomes and can prevent escalation.
